Great hood, but crazy lead times / no stock options / high fee
Let me first say in love EE gear, and have used everything from their quilts, jackets, to this hood. This hood was gifted to me, and it's definitely great! Very warm, and crazy light! I tried recommending it to several friends for an upcoming winter hike.. but they told me the lead time was 13 weeks
Hoodlum
I’m a big guy. The XL hoodlum is a bit tight around the neck. Otherwise happy.
Hoodlum (Ninja) in charcoal/black
Great piece, replaces all other types of stocking, beanie or whatever for a chill free warm sleep/system. Covers any daytime needs as well during inclimate weather, wind, etc., no what the wind gets in or could blow free from ones head... Excellent attention to detail and crafts-women-ship or maybe a fella whoever made it..! Thank you!
From Cold Head to Cozy
Very satisfied with this product. I tried it in 29 degree weather. I am an overweight 60 yr old female. Cold sleeper just may never be in my vocabulary again!
Hoodlum
I love my Hoodlum! I can never keep a hat on my head while sleeping, it always gets pushed off when I change position or move my head. This is the perfect accessory to keeping my head warm and eliminating cold drafts around the neck (a common problem with quilts). The only downside to the Hoodlum is that, yes, I do look ridiculous wearing it. But being warm is sooo worth it!
warm and comfortable
I've only used the hoodlum for two nights so far, and I plan to bring it with me on all of my backpacking and camping trips. The hoodlum has a long neck covering which is great because I like wearing jackets and pullovers without hoods sometimes. I got the 4oz version, and camped in WV in October when the overnight lows dipped to about 30 F. I was toasty warm all night and in the morning while breaking down camp. No reservations!
Hoodlum Addition
Wonderful product. Soft and warm. Completes the quilt with hood option. Great addition.
Comfy and cozy
Fits great and super warm. Very satisfied.
Hoodlum is great
I am new to quilts and the Hoodlum is the perfect addition to my Revelation. I took my gear on a 5 week trip to Glacier, MT., Sawtooths, ID., and CO recently and had about 5 nights in the 20's. Both performed wonderfully and the Hoodlum kept me warm on the really cold windy nights. Comfortable, easy to put on and adjust. I saw some complaints about the cord adjustment but it seemed to work fine for me.
Warm and cozy
I was skeptical at first of the EE sleeping system. It has come in very handy on cold & windy moments and the hoodlum functioned well. It is adjustable and customizable to fit the user as he or she desires. As I used the hoodlum for sleeping, I cinched everything except my nose and it kept me perfectly warm. I was concerned that the cold would creep from my backside, however, I was wrong! Unlike traditional mummy bags, I appreciate the freedom of movement the hoodlum allows while keeping me warm. I am able to place the cord behind my head and it stays out of the way. Very happy with this product. Everyone in my household has used it and has been extremely functional to accompany a jacket/coat. It is ultra light and packs down into almost nothing.
Great Design with one Major Downside
This works almost perfectly with the quilt because it's very warm and moves with your head. However, the string, when sinched, ends up right across my eyes and the bridge of my nose. Rather uncomfortable. Mine was made-to-order, so perhaps there's a defect in this one? I'll be emailing to find out. I really love it otherwise and definitely want it to work!
Hoodlum Happiness
With the explanation that I have not yet used the Hoodlum with my quilt I am very happy. I've used this with both a hoodless down jacket, and with a hardshell, and both times my head was kept plenty warm. (Major issue for us bald people!) Based on the way this extends and snaps, I don't foresee issues using with my quilt at night.
great for sleepin
If you use a quilt for sleeping and get a cold head, this is for you. The only quibble is with the tie-back that can get into weird spots if you roll around in your sleep. It might benefit from a smaller profile retaining piece...
An amazing complement to a light puffy jacket too during long breaks in winter hiking.
Hoodlum
I like it! Very comfy. I haven't had a chance to use it with my EE quilt but I have used it as a hood with a puffy jacket on one 10 degree evening last week. I have the lighter, 2 oz Apex version, but, my head and neck were still warm. Drawstring is a simple design but it works without much fuss.
2oz Hoodlum in Sweden
I love this thing, totally worth the extra grams! I have used it in about -3 C, together with a merino wool buff.
Fits all sizes
It comfortably fits a small-headed 7 year old and large-headed adult male. I am really impressed with the design of the hoodlum.
Better than expected!
Very impressed with the Hoodlum. The cut (& therefore shape) of the hood is much nicer than the images show.
This hoodlum convinced me to go for a quilt
I was very skeptical about quilts until I found out you can get separate hoodlums. I get cold pretty easily as I'm skinny so what I did is I bought a slight larger quilt that goes up to my ears. This means in below freezing temperatures I get fully covered with the hoodlum on. The cool thing of the hoodlum is you can also use it as hood combined with a hoodless down jacket. This way you can save weight and space ;) The hoodlum is super UL, weighs nothing and it packs TINY. Great buy!
Awesome hat!
Great super lightweight hat. Love the versatility and fit. Great addition to my hiking kit.
Superb -- better than alternatives
I used the 0° last winter. I've had a chance to compare it with the (down) Zpacks Goose Hood, made by Goosefoot gear. I like the Hoodlum MUCH better. Why?
- Hoodlum doesn't have the special care issues that down alternatives do
- Hoodlum seems to breathe better
- Hoodlum is easier to pull down over the top of my face
The Hoodlum is now one of my favorite items in my winter kit.
Awesome noggin warmer
I hedged on buying my 20°-40° Hoodlum initially; I'm glad that I pulled the trigger and purchased it with my Revelation. It's exceeding light, warm, and very adjustable. I have worn it several different configurations depending on temps, and there are several more possibilities. I've had it down to the lower 20°s and my head stayed toasty. I don't really like jackets with a hood, so my Hoodlum fills the need when I wear it with my down jacket- on the trail or in camp. As for fit, I have a rather large head and the Hoodlum fits great. Thanks EE!
Headbag
Got this to go along with my Revelation, Material is excellent next to skin very comfy and very fluffy.
I got the lightest version and have used it now on a few occasions, temperature rating is accurate.
Would highly recommend getting with a quilt as its a highly packable and versatile peice. Can leave it open when its hot or button and drawsting when its cold.
Great Addition to my Back Country Sleep Gear!!
Great investment! Excellent addition to my back country sleep gear adds extra warmth and comfort on cold damp nights with next to no extra weight to carry! Thank you!!
Hoodlum works crazy well
This piece of gear is so light you forget you have it on. It keeps neck and upper shoulders warm too. No more touque tourniquets or pop offs through the night! The Hoodlum can be snugged up with the draw string a bit and slid over eyes to act as a light shade for sleep-in mornings as well. There's nothing I don't like about it.
Warm and comfortable
Extremely warm and comfortable. I was concerned the drawstring on the back of the head would not be comfortable but it sits far enough up on your head you don't feel it.
Rain day in Alaska
We hiked 6 hours in rain above tree line. We where thankfull for the shelter cabin. Besides a buff I had no other hat. And this hat was great for putting on my wet head after all,the rain, spent the night in it with my quilt. It worked great no tangling up. Very nice product.
They don't fit all head and necks, especially big ones.
I want to preface this with being clear I love my enlightened quilt and underquilt and plan on buying more things from them, it's only this one product I had a problem with. When I got it I could see it was well made, the fabric was soft and it it looked really cool. That's the first two stars.
However, the hoodlum did not come close to fitting me. I could not snap any of the snaps, in fact I was about an inch and a half away from being able to come close to snapping them and the material had no stretch to it so there was no way I could use it. I do have a big head and neck and have to buy big hats, so it not fitting maybe should not have been such a suprise.. But I assumed because their was no size big or small to this product, it would be made to fit a larger head/neck and then if your head was smaller you could use the adjustments to make it fit. That was not the case with the one I received. It does not seem like you can get them made bigger as an option, so I would caution anyone with a larger head or neck to check the dimensions and measure your head before ordering.
Their customer service is really amazing and have always gone out of their way be helpful and this is no exception. I was able to return it and get a full refund, and I think that deserves another star. So, disputes this product not working for me at all, I still feel good about giving it three stars.
Light and warm
Very light and warm. I use a home made quilt and this makes a great hood for it. Well made.
Light Weight & Great Quality
Recently used the Hoodlum on an AT Section Hike. Temps got down to upper 30s on the mountain top. The Hoodlum kept me very warm throughout the night and the morning until I started hiking.
Funky and functional
Superb for that predawn chill. So light why wouldn't you always pack it "just in case". Hardly notice it on. Doubles as an excellent inflatable pillowcase so it's always on hand in the middle of the night if needed.
Good Hood
The hoodlum is a good product. It's lightweight and it kept me warm. I have one suggestion for improving the design. After a full day of hiking, I have a sweaty face/neck. Waking up in the middle of the night with the hood plastered to my face sucks. It would be nice if the inside was lined with some material like fleece or microfiber, at least in the lower portions that contact skin. I'm not sure what this would add as far as weight goes. It would be even nicer if this interior lining was removable so that it could be washed separately and more frequently. Velcro?
Like a parka for your head.
Keeps your head super warm, anf therefore the rest of you...and nice if you're a bit claustro about sleeping bags with hoods.
So fantastic
With this I don't need my down jacket to have a hood. I wore a wool buff under this, and slept happily all night. When I got up to pee, I didn't have to go hunting for a hat to keep me warm outside of my bag.
Outstanding piece of gear
I had a chance to use this baby on a trip to the Appalachian Trail in Tennessee and love it.
It packs up super small and weighs nearly nothing but packs some serious warmth for my EE Revelation quilts. It makes a great companion to them.
Fantastic product
I have used this product twice so far. Both times it has performed well. I have the 4 oz APEX version. Last weekend it got down to 0 deg F and it worked well. I mainly use it while sleeping and while emerging from the tent and starting the morning chores. The fabric is a "bit" thin (which has its own merits), so you need to be careful with it around camp/brushes/trees. It compresses well and takes up virtually no pack room. I will always just keep it in my stuff sack with my quilt or sleeping bag and an extra pair of wool socks so it is available when I go to sleep
Perfect!
I have blood circulation issues and was concerned at the idea of buying a quilt without a hood. But this hood is the best ever! It is comfortable and super warm, and it goes really low on the neck so that no cold air can pass. I'm in love!
I'm a fan
Great piece of gear. On a recent Big Bend Ranch trip, it helped me warm with a down jacket in the evening with a Revelation quilt at night with temps down to around 20. The elastic doodad works well to keep it positioned perfectly. Can't beat the warmth for the weight -- 2 ounces!
Functional details set the Hoodlum apart
I have owned 3 down hoods, and the Hoodlum is my first synthetic hood. I bought the 2.1 oz. version to go with a 40 degree quilt set up. There are 2 details in the design that really impress me.
The first impressive detail that I noticed was the drawstring closure. It allows good adjustment of the face opening. And when secured around the back of the head, it effectively controls the width of the face opening, keeping it out of your eyes. Simple to adjust.
The second detail that I think is worth mentioning, is the small webbing loop behind each snap. The Hoodlum comes with 3 snaps in front which give wider venting options. These webbing loops are little pull tabs. They aid dexterity with snapping and unsnapping.
I imagine that they also take some stress off of the fabric. I have experienced fabric ripping when unsnapping a quilt once. And I think if this detail would have been used, it would have prevented that damage.
Warm and versatile
I bought the 4 oz Apex version of this to use with a 0 degree convert for winter camping in Minnesota. I haven't had a chance to use it for my sleep system yet, but I've worn it while outside on nights where the air temp was -9 F with a wind chill of -30 F.
I do a lot of astronomy and stargazing in my spare time, and this requires you to be nearly motionless while trying to hone on space objects with your telescope. The hoodlum, along with adequate insulation on all other parts of my body, keeps me extremely warm while doing this in subzero temperatures. The neck on it is long enough to tuck into any coat or jacket to prevent drafts and cold spots. Oh, and this thing easily weighs less than any other fleece, acrylic, or wool hat that I own.
The hoodlum is absolutely fantastic! I would recommend this as an extremely warm head insulator, even if you don't need it for a quilt sleep system.
Easy to Overlook Value
I picked up the hoodlum on a whim. I've used beanies and balaclavas and they've done a fine job of keeping the cold at bay. But when I put on the hoodlum I had a great, comfortable nights sleep. It was comfortable against my skin, i got sufficient air circulating to avoid sweating, and when I wore it during a snowstorm I felt positively cozy.
Smartest $ I've spent this summer.
Great multi use hat
Brought this instead of my normal beanie on my last trip and was super impressed. Was using this as a hood for my down jacket (no hood) as well as sleeping hat.
Great Noggin Cover
Got this to go with my Enigma quilt. I ordered the 2.1 oz. APEX. Just used it on a 5 day trip in the southwest with temps down to about 28°F. It was very cozy and comfortable to sleep in. I also liked using it with my ultralight down sweater (which has no hood) for early morning and evening "camp time". My Hoodlum weighs in at 1.7oz but is still lighter and warmer than my Smartwool hat which I normally use. Great quality product.
Excellent multi-use hood
I purchased this hood to use in cold weather in conjunction with my 20 degree revelation quilt in the Appalachian Mountains. I think it's a great idea to have a modular hood that you can use during cold weather, but not have to have attached during warmer weather.
Plus: You can wear the hood by itself with your jacket when you're not sleeping, which truly makes this a multifunctional piece of kit.
The Hoodlum fits very well and works perfectly with the quilt.
Pros: Very warm, ultra light weight, multifunctional, good fit, great quality , increases the warmth rating of your quilt.
Cons: none other than I wish it cost a bit less.
Bottom line: I highly recommend this hood if you are going to be sleeping in temps below 25 degrees.
LOOKED AT LOTS OF OTHER HOODS
SUPER WARM AND DURABLE. I looked at other hoods and they were all down.
Down doesn't do well when it gets dirty or wet, so the synthetic insulation was a no brainer. Well made and light, I sleep in it and have it as my emergency headgear.
Super warm super cozy
Used hoodlum to keep my head warm in cold White Mountain nights and it worked flawlessly. So warm, so cozy and yet featherlight. No reason to leave it behind while sleeping outside. Recommended!
