A favorite of long distance backpackers, the Torrid Jacket offers warmth, wind protection, and moisture resistance at an ultralight weight. Designed to keep you warm while keeping your pack light, the jacket starts at just 6.0 oz (220g). Built using 2oz/yd² CLIMASHIELD™ APEX synthetic insulation, the Torrid maintains warmth and breathability even when damp.

The smooth ultralight nylon fabric has a durable water repellent finish for better performance in light precipitation. The adjustable waistband and elastic cuffs keep warmth in and cold out. The optional hood adjusts with a shock cord, and a grosgrain zipper garage at the chin increases comfort. The Torrid Jacket is slightly oversized to accommodate layers, and has raglan sleeves for a full range of movement. For those who won’t let weather get in the way, the Torrid Jacket is the perfect 3-season layer.

Super complet

Ultra léger, la matière est douce, bien coupé. Tient bien chaud.

Best synthetic puffy available

After extensive research, I settled on this synthetic puffy as it clearly edges all the competition in the ultralight AND synthetic niche. I even prefer it to my previous favourite pick, the Montbell Thermawrap. It is a well made jacket perfect for ultralight backpacking when the weather makes even the best « water-resistant down » unreliable. Obviously a down jacket will have superior durability in the long run, and will therefore be a more cost-efficient option, but if you are looking for the best synthetic option yet, I have little complaints about this one.

Indeed, delicate fabrics call for reasonable handling, but this is still sturdy enough for normal backpacking (without bushwhacking) in the 7D fabric (inner & outer). It doesn’t need to be babied as much as I imagined. My main durability concern is around the zips as that is where I expect to see more wear and tear.

As mentioned by other reviewers, the inner fabric will bunch out at the wrist when sliding your dirty arms, but that’s only a minor annoyance to me. It is not a fashion-statement piece anyway. Some strategic sewing could possibly address that issue. Also, the wrists are fairly tight, so your chunky Garmin Fenix won’t fit… Finally, the hood is snug, if not on the smaller size if you have a big head like mine. It is very functional and despite the lack of draw cords for multiple adjustments, it stays nicely in place. Also, get a hood. The weight penalty is minor for the ridiculous amount of warmth it adds. Keep the hoodless puffies to walk around town in a more stylish jacket with baffles.
