Highly recommend these windpants. They can be thrown over shorts or leggings for an extra layer of warmth as they keep heat contained in your legs. I suggest going up in size to fit over layers.

Copperfield wind pants

Let me first say that I love these pants!! I took them on my John Muir trail and wore them every morning to cut the chill, hold in some heat, and anytime the wind got the best of me. I hiked in Patagonia baggie shorts or my base layer wool leggings, depending on the temps. They slid over each without issue. But honestly, wearing these over my shorts when the mornings were still in the 40's, kept me warm. This also allowed me to mail my pants back when I hit Toulumne Meadows and save pack weight, since pairing the wind pants and base layer together were perfect for cold weather. I was stopped so many times on the trail by curious hikers who could not believe the minuscule amount of weight these were. They also pack up so tiny, they fit into my hip belt pocket taking up only a fraction of space. They easily stuffed into an extra " Ben's" mosquito head net bag I had lying around. My husband teased me when I first wore my "garbage bag pants", but by the end of the trail, he wanted a pair for our next year trip to the sierra's. Next, durability. Incredible. I really figured that I would tear them up during the trail, considering the incredible light weight fabric. The JMT is rocky and tough. I sat on granite, logs, dirt etc, and they are still good as new. And lastly, customer service and fit. I ordered the women's size medium. I am 5'5, and 150#, athletic fit, waist 29/30. I received the MEN size medium instead by mistake. I contacted customer service and they sent the women pair out immediately, even before I returned the other pair! They even suggested I hold off and compare the two before sending one back. I tried on both, and actually kept the men's and sent back the women's. There are two reasons why I kept the men's. Comparing them, the men's were slightly longer (2 inches) which I really liked. They hit right at the ankle. And secondly, they were just slightly wider (maybe an inch) in the (mid) hip area which accommodated my booty a bit more, and range in motion when sitting/standing/climbing. I can't stress how much this one piece of gear made such a huge difference for temperature control and comfort level. I have already used them again for other hikes, and they will always go with me in my day hike ditty bag, along with my emergency poncho.
