Excellent jacket
I bought this as a Christmas present for my wife. Trying to be sneaky, I didn't get her measurements but instead rolled the dice and defaulted to her usual size Medium. She's 5'7", 135lbs and wears a medium in most tops and outerwear, although she also has broad shoulders that sometimes cause mediums to not fit quite right. Out of the box we were a little nervous because the jacket looked narrow across the shoulders, but that's just a quirk of wear the seams lie. It actually fit exactly right, and looks nice too. She took it on our recent 6-day winter Grand Canyon hike and it proved extremely versatile, worn alone or even over another insulating layer on cold nights and mornings. Its perfect.
Review on Measurements - yet to road test but so far so good!
Although I haven't really used this jacket much yet, I wanted to write a review re sizing since I had read many varied recommendations on sizing up, going with the men's version, etc. Hope my experience can shed some light on sizing for you, for those with a similar body type as me. TLDR: I measured myself, followed the sizing chart and ordered the corresponding size jacket, and it fits well!
I ordered the women's M jacket and here are my measured sizes:
Sleve 29
Bust 36.5
Chest 34.5
Waist 29
Hips 38
I am 5'6'' and weigh 140-145 lb. I tried the jacket on both wearing a tank top underneath and a light sweater underneath and it fits well over both. I personally find the wrist elastic perfect - not too tight. I find the length of the jacket good - it covers the top part of my butt. The fabric is soft, and I really like the forrest green color. Basically, it fits really well!
I took this out for an evening walk last night in high 30s and was toasty. Am very excited to use this on future backpacking trips! Hope this helps!
Women's Torrid APEX Jacket Custom
I have the Women's Torrid APEX Jacket Custom with hood in size small, Graphite 7D fabric outside and inside. Immediately, I determined the color to be a brown, and not grey. It pairs well with light blue, light pink, light grey, or black. I find it fits well enough, but I am 5' 2.5" tall with a back width of 14.75" and measurements currently at 34", 28", 34". The jacket is snuggest at the bottom around mid-hip, but I don't find it too tight. I imagine a few inches might be gained from removing the elastic. It's loosest around true waist, and although more fitted, princess seams would be flattering, this jacket doesn't look bad. The raglan sleeves suit broad shoulders nicely. I have no issue with the jacket's sleeve length, my personal sleeve length being 23". I find the hood a touch too high, but the top of my head is only 10.5" from my shoulders and just 21.25" around. I think the hood is fine and probably perfect for most. They don't call this a magic jacket for nothing. It weighs practically nothing and is really warm as it holds in your body heat. I've been wearing it over wool base layers and haven't been cold in Connecticut, yet.
Custom Women’s Torrid Jacket
This 3-star review is based on the terrible fit that doesn’t correspond to the advertised size chart measurements. Plus, due to the return policy, you can’t return it without a substantial loss. Stinks!
I really wanted to love this jacket, but I don’t and if it weren’t custom, I would return it. To be fair, I have not taken this on a BP trip yet and when I do, I may change my review if it performs well.
ITMT, if you’re a woman who is not super tall and slim, don’t order this. After careful review of all EE size information and other reviews, I chose a Small. Maybe I could’ve gone with a Medium, but I don’t think that would help. Again, I ordered according to the size chart, but the actual cut of the jacket is weird. It’s really tight in some places and really loose in others.
I am 5’-2” and weigh 120 lbs. I have a pretty average female skeleton and build. I would not say I am either “Curvey” or “slim.” Just average. So it baffles me why this jacket fits very large in the shoulders and stomach area yet very tight across the chest and around the hips! WTF!
Exactly what type of woman did they measure to arrive at this inverse measuring system. Apparently it only fits if your b**bs have migrated north to your shoulders and your *ss has migrated up your torso.
You might be able to shimmy it down your hips, and keep the end of the jacket there if they installed a draw cord so the hem width could be adjustable and loosened up a bit, but no, just a rigid elastic band is in the hem.
Since I can’t return this, I’ll try it in the field, but really for such an expensive, custom, technical jacket, they should master the fit for women. At least follow their own size chart measurements, which didn’t happen here.
I will say the sewing quality is good so 3 stars instead of 1 or 2 .
Bottom line, unless you’re a very tall, slender woman, don’t order this jacket.
Women's Torrid APEX Jacket Custom
My new jacket has now experienced several skiing days! It feels perfectly comfortable, super light and (very) warm. I almost cannot resist to order another one.
Purchased 3 jackets and received 3 winners
I purchased three jackets for my family, and each one is excellent! I first contacted customer service with a couple of sizing questions, which were answered almost immediately, and with great detail. We wear these jackets almost every day in Colorado, and we all love them, as they keep us warm and dry. The order was easy and all jackets arrived exactly as requested. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this product.
Torrid APEX Jacket
Absolutely love the jacket. I'm 5'5", 125 lbs and got a medium and fit perfect. It packs down into nothing and weighs very little. The hood fit great and helped keep me warm. It's supposed to be my backpacking jacket but I find myself wearing it around town. Definitely a worthwhile purchase. It was worth the wait.
Pretty great
Love the jacket. Ordered a mens and a womens to compare, and was pleasantly surprised with the womens fit not being too tight or contoured. I normally wear mens gear, but the mens torso bunched up in the mid section. What I'm not super happy with is the neck, which seems too tight for an outerwear piece (It'll be a tight fit layering a fleece with a collar). Not deal-breaker bad, so I'll live with it.
Its cozy and light and comfortable, so I'm happy.
Way too small
I am 5"4' and weight 115. I ordered a size small which is my typical size and it is way too small. I can't even wear a normal shirt under it. It is tight around the waist and the arms are really snug. I have no other complaint. It seems to be great other than that. I can't really comment on warmth because I can't wear it. Kind of a huge bummer because it takes so long to get it after you order it and I was so excited. My husband also ordered one and his is perfect. He loves it. I am only leaving this review in hopes that someone my size won't make the mistake I did.
Weird fit--I'd recommend sizing up or going for the men's jacket
I was so excited about receiving my jacket. After an 8 week + wait it's so disappointing to find myself debating between settling for an ill, uncomfortable fit or trying to sell my jacket and wait another 8 weeks for a better size. You're not going to win any fashion contests with this jacket which I knew going in but the women's jacket is just so short it looks ridiculous like I'm wearing a kids coat and it's restricting. For reference I'm 5/4, a size 2 and normally wear an XS in Patagonia. I bought the small women's apex 7D/7D and I really wish I would have listened to other reviews and gone with the men's version instead. Either way it's going to look frumpy due to the jacket design but at least it'd be more comfortable. But on a positive note jacket is amazingly light and warm as hell.
Amazing product. Looks great and performs.
The Torid is my second piece of EE products and I absolutely love it. I had occasion to use it on a first backpacking trip of the season in PNW just recently. It shed light precip well, kept me cozy at night and in the morning, and packs up small. I loved that I got to pick the colors. I do wish EE had a customizable zipper color so I could go nuts with mismatched colors. That said, still cool to customize. The jacket is amazing and would recommend.
Torrid Apex is great
I have worn it in 10-20 degree weather (10 with a shirt and fleece - 20 with a shirt only) and I was nice and warm. I have only used it for running around (snow is too deep to hike), but if it works this well with just ordinary daily activity, it will be fantastic for hiking.
Torrid
This jacket is a beast for it wieght by FAR warmer then anything I have owned . You listening ghost whisperer? I have had it out in the teens and it does it's job . The hood cozy and snug. I'm going to put ties on the zippers cuz they r basically useless . The pockets adequate . I've named this thing Toyo ..which is the main source of heat in Alaska ♥️
A Heat Machine
I call this jacket my heat machine! I purchased the hooded jacket with 10D exterior charcoal gray fabric and 7D orange interior fabric, and it has kept me comfortable wearing only one layer underneath as cold as the mid 20s. I have found that I can also turn it inside out and wear it with the orange on the outside when hiking during hunting season. I also added lightweight pulls on each of the zippers to better grasp them with cold or gloved fingers. I've worn down jackets for years, but this jacket is much warmer.
Torrid Apex jacket
Comfy. Soft. Cozy. Can’t hike in it, too hot for my climate (Pacific Northwest) but put it on right away after hike, so toasty. The pockets are perfect and hood fits nicely. The large fits me perfectly, I’m 5’5” 150lbs. Love it. Can’t wait to wear it with my torrid pants as a sleep system with the quilt. Definitely recommend this jacket.
warm but short
The jacket kept me warm doing minimal activity around camp. I am 5'2" and 125lbs, wish I would have ordered a medium instead of the small. Also it isn't long enough to go over my butt.
Favorite piece of gear
I 100% recommend this jacket: it’s very warm and incredibly light. It was one of my favorite pieces of gear on my PCT thru hike. It kept me warm from the cold desert nights to the last chilly mornings in Washington through the crazy amount of snow of the Sierra. It’s very comfortable both to wear at camp or to actively hike in it. The 7D fabric, both inside and outside, was a great choice too: it’s actually very resistant and it feels great on the skin. I have been really impressed by this jacket (weight, warmth, durability...) and I would definitely buy it again!
Worth the wait!
After a long period of researching every backpacking jacket available (and there are MANY), I decided to go with this one (never mind that I was sold when I heard Darwin say he loved it). It is custom made and I was patient (somewhat...I looked at my order every day to see if it changed from "fulfillment"). It was absolutely worth the wait.
It's lightweight and great for backpacking. Though you can put it all into a pocket, the jacket doesn't offer the ability to close that pocket. However, I've determined that it's not really necessary. It pretty much stays in the pocket. It takes up very little space and it very lightweight.
It's warm. Very warm. I ordered the 20D outside, 7D inside. So far, it's exactly what I needed. I've been outside when it was 20 degrees and was comfortable in a t-shirt (actually started to sweat). I'll be taking it with me when I hike the Chicago Basin so I might be updating this after that experience. I will say that my super smart and amazing boyfriend said I should have ordered 10D, 7D but I never accept his "suggestions". Before making a decision, I would do a little more research on that aspect because I honestly feel like my jacket will keep me a bit more dry and I didn't mind the minuscule amount of extra weight. It really is preference.
As far as sizing, I'm 5'3 and 158 pounds (most days) and I ordered a medium which fits. It's snug at the wrists but has been nice when it's windy and cold. I can wear a sweater under it and it's comfortable but I have friends that like clothing a little more loose and would suggest one size larger for them.
For those purchasing for looks, I think it looks fab. I'm not a fashion guru and have often been called out by friends (seriously though...tennis shoes and skirts ARE cool) on my wardrobe but have had many compliments.
Overall, I would purchase this jacket again if needed (I tend to lose things often...it could happen).
I want to use it for everything.
I bought this jacket for backpacking as my previous (down) backpacking jackets were getting pretty flat. It's so comfortable that I started wearing it to work. I had to force myself to hang it where I couldn't see it so I wouldn't be tempted to wear it all the time so I wouldn't wear it out before I needed it for backpacking! I love that I can throw it on at rest stops over my sweaty shirt and it doesn't make the insulation wither.
The Women's Torrid Apex Jacket is a prime example of EE's amazing product line!
This jacket did not disappoint! I got the hooded size small with purple 10D outer and graphite 7D inner. It is soooo warm and the 7D on the inside is so incredibly soft. EE's size chart is also pretty spot on. I was a bit worried since I am normally an XS in most clothing, but the small fit so much better than I anticipated! For reference, I am 5'1 & 115 lbs. My only complaints are that the sleeves are a bit long (honestly, this is kind of a positive since this just gives me a bit more insulation in the arms due to the snugness of the wrist closures) and the elastic on the waist is a touch baggier than I'd prefer. All in all though, this is truly a great jacket! This will definitely be my go-to jacket for all of my chilly, outdoor pursuits.
Best Jacket Ever!
Best jacket ever!!!!! So comfortable. I wear it almost every day in the winter. I’m comfortable in it in temperatures between 55-15 degrees. Super breathable. I can wear it down to 15 degrees with just a warm sweater and t-shirt. Truly amazing jacket. Best thing for backpacking too. Compresses down to a really small size. You won’t regret getting it.
Women's Torrid APEX Jacket Custom
I love this jacket! The Torrid is well made and has exceeded my expectations. I went with 10D outside and 7D inside. It's amazingly lightweight and extremely warm just as advertised. It's been my go to jacket since I received it a month ago. The fit is perfect. It's just roomy enough for layering, but also snug enough if you don't. Wish I had ordered one sooner.
Torrid jacket
I LOVE my new jacket. It is super lightweight but very WARM. I have the Ghost Whispere but it was never warm enough for me so I got this instead. It is fantastic!!!
Women’s torrid apex jacket
I love this jacket. It has been a fabulous hiking jacket. I am a cold person. I have difficulty keeping warm. This jacket is very light weight, it’s like wearing no jacket at all. Normally I wear lots of layers to keep warm, but with this jacket I can wear a long sleeved-light weight wicking shirt with the jacket and be toasty warm. The jacket will be wet on the inside after hours of hiking, I simply turn it inside out and it dries in no time at all.
Torrid Apex Jacket
Love this jacket! This is my main backpacking jacket due to being lightweight, compacts well and keeps me warm and toasty.
