Conundrum
I’m a 240lb big guy and bought a XL 10 degree 950 down conundrum for winter snowshoeing in Michigan. I’ve never found a stock winter bag that fits my shoulders off the shelf after years of looking. I’m now completely enamored with this conundrum!! Plenty of room, comfortable, the fabric doesn’t feel like plastic on my skin (legitimately breathable!) and very warm. I was skeptical about the connection to my Nemo mat, but after many nights I have NO complaints. The coldest night I’ve had so far was only 28 degrees, but I was too warm and took off all thermal layers and left it unzipped to keep from overheating. I have no doubt about the 10 degree rating.
I also love that there’s no hood! (I hate mummy bags!) As a side and stomach sleeper the mat connection without a hood is perfect for me.
I’ve recommended this bag to every backpacker I know!
Also works well in my hammock with an under quilt.
10/10 would recommend
I just recently purchased my first EE quilt and I am beyond pleased with it. A 20 degree 950 fill kept me plenty warm in sun freezing temps with significant wind chill. The small size and weight when packed along with the customization options available really made this bag stand out to me. My only issue, as others have also pointed out, is that the zipper catches almost every time. If this could be fixed I’d never consider another
Worth it
I got a zero degree Conundrum to hike the Chilkoot trail and other adventures in Alaska. I get cold easily at night, but this bag kept me warm. Coldest I have tried so far was only about 38 degrees, but for me to be completely warm at that temperature is a huge win! Just a thought, I'm a small person, 5' and 110LB, and the small short size just fits. (I have nicknamed my bad "the worm" because that's pretty much what I feel like once I'm all snuggled in). If you are any bigger than me, probably go for a regular size.
Most versatile sleeping system.
I have a 10 degree 950 full bag and had comfortably slept in temperatures from 35-75 degrees. I wanted one bag for almost any situation and this is the closest I’ve found.
Amazing!
I recently field tested my new -10* Conundrum. For the purpose of this test, we did not turn the stove on and opened the windows of the tent to keep it cold. Normally I sleep in a merino base layer but for this test just went with light cotton trunks and tee. it was cold enough to see my breath just below freezing. I was cold when I pulled the quilt over myself. In literally ten seconds I was warm. Stranger still, the cot i was sleeping on wasn't cold anymore. How did that happen? It defies imagination. All I know is this quilt exceeded my wildest expectations and I didn't even need to wear the Hoodlum. I have worn a Hoodlum (I own all three weights) in the past and love em but it needs to be really frigid to wear em. The Conundrum is one of five EE quilts I own and easily my favorite. It will go on every backcountry trip where temps at night are below 40*. Venting allows the -10* quilt to work well in a wide variety of temps...my 0* quilt has filled this role for years. The Conundrum is even better. You cannot make a quilt warmer but you can make em comfortable for a wide spectrum of temps by venting and adjusting your base layer and head gear. The Conundrum with overfill is thermal perfection. It's nice to crawl under after seeing your midnight pee instantly freeze when hitting the ground. EE quilts are the best...worth every cent.
Conundrum - 10 degree
I have had the 10 degree Conundrum for a couple years now. I also own several other EE quilts. It keeps me reliably warm in temps down to the 20s, past that I have to supplement with a jacket or a lighter weight quilt. Bear in mind that I am a cold sleeper. My one gripe about this quilt and any EE quilt with a zipper is, as noted by others, that the zippers seem to get stuck constantly. They catch on fabric or just jam for no apparent reason. If EE fixed this issue somehow, their quilts would be absolutely perfect. I also have to say that EE provides excellent customer support - so good to work with and they stand behind their products.
Conundrum
I purchased the conundrum for a friend. The colors were perfect, and she loves it. It arrived just in time for a hike we were planning and she slept great, stayed warm all night. EE quilts and sleeping bags pack down small, extremely light weight, and in my opinion are the best.
Warm and light
Really loving this sleeping bag. I got a: Enlightened Equipment Conundrum custom long/wide 85x54inch mummy 34oz 10F 850-duck down for ~$400. It's light, compact, and has kept me warm so far this Summer (along with a 2.5inch thick Thermarest NeoAir Xtherm long 25x77x2.5in 1lb4oz R5.7), though nights have only gone down to about 48-52 so far. I sleep cold, so will have to test it at lower temps in the coming months, hopefully the combo will suffice for temps around and just below freezing.
Conundrum Custom, short, slim, 30 F
The quilt was sent to Germany.
The service of EE by e-mail, I found very good. My questions were always answered in a friendly and timely manner. The delivery was announced by email, and the goods arrived as advertised. Everything OK.
With such a high-quality product I would have liked that the cardboard would have been noticeably larger. The quilt was not compressed, but the box was very small.
What I find particularly great about EE is that they manufacture their products in the USA. Of course it is a little more expensive, but for me it was worth it.
The processing of the seams are very good. The loft is incredibly high. The down are impregnated, so they lose less moisture in the loft. Yes, that's right, I found that on my tour (about 40 times using the quilt). I had a few days, which were very humid. BUT! The downs dry much MUCH slower. So I could not find any benefit of this impregnated down for me.
Even after the tour, the loft of the down is CLEARLY worse than before. I never had that with my other down products without the impregnated down.
I am a little surprised that this has not noticed any customers, and that has not been passed on by any customer. That this EE has not noticed, I find also very strange. You also test your own products under real conditions.
Conclusion: Excellent product, Made in USA, very good service, but the impregnated down I would replace in the future by normal.
Identity Crisis
Great bag, 5 stars, BUT.... If you sell it as a sleeping bag, don’t build it like a quilt. The quilt cult would have you orient the straps under you, then so too goes the zipper and draft tube: pointless. If you orient the zipper to your left or right like a “sleeping bag” the draw string hangs on your nose like a noose (and the curious strap clips near the zipper are now... pointless). How I made my $600 bag a GREAT bag: I took EEs obsession with straps and made them work for the bag I bought. I bought a total of 3 bag straps and orient them around my NEMO Tensor bag at shoulder, waist and calf locations. Then,,,, wait for it.... I physically sewed extra clip ends to the outside of my Bag. Yes I did. Blasphemous yes. The S-Bag clips onto my pad with the zipper on my right side as you would expect a “Sleeping bag’ to be. And I moved the draw string noose to my left side. The bag and pad become one, never twisted. Never wake up with chattering teeth because your burrito wrapped quilt unraveled while you dreamed of Big Foot spooning you.
Conundrum -10 custom
I love everything about the bag except the zippers. The zippers suck! I never got a smooth zip up in the mountains, not once. I wish they would change it or fix it otherwise its the perfect warmth to weight ratio! I used this in rainier for 5 days camping on glaciers. I stayed toasty! On one rainy/sleet and windy night, the too of my bad was wet but it kept giving me warmth and in the morning everything dried out.
Conondrum Custom
Absolutely love this sleeping bag! I got mine made to 0 degree 850 fill as I backpack all year. As soon as I get in, I’m warm, no warm up time like my old bag needed. Love the two clips and two snaps to keep the bag semi closed if I don’t feel like zipping it up in warmer weather. All snaps and zippers are ultralight and the material is truly rip safe. If I could I’d give this bag 10 stars! Lovely work, it does take a while to receive this product but it’s well worth the money and wait!
Conundrum
I love this thing! I bought a 40 degree one earlier this year for summer use and loved it so much I sold my old winter sleeping bag to buy a second Conundrum for colder weather. The zipper and enclosed toe box make this thing perfectly flexible for me. I sleep pretty hot (especially for a woman) so I usually just leave the bag unzipped and tuck it around me. However, I was very grateful to have the zipper to turn this into more of a sleeping bag than a quilt the one night this summer when the temperature dropped to below freezing overnight completely unexpectedly; I slept reasonably comfortably at 30 degrees in my 40 degree bag.
I spent months debating about which summer bag to buy. I kept leaning toward this one but had a hard time finding reviews from other women. Particularly from fellow women with wide hips who have previously struggled with bags being too snug in the butt area. So I'm providing this information in case there are other women out there also debating about this bag:
I'm 5'8", 145 pounds with a traditional pear shape. I'm a side sleeper and I move around quite a lot in my sleep. I bought the regular length/regular width for both bags. I have plenty of space for me to move around in my sleep without feeling confined and can easily fit some gear in with me, when necessary. I don't find the bag to be snug anywhere; it's quite cozy and I'm happy to be free from getting tangled in a mummy bag from my constant moving. I do sleep pretty warm so I would recommend getting a lower rated bag if you are a typical colder sleeper.
Conundrum
Well after lots of youtube and review I got the Long ex-wide 10 degree bag I wish I went with a long-wide 20. some of the youtube people said the bag was 4" smaller in width then advertised, so I thought I would order a bigger size I don't like to be confined in a slipping bag. Well the bag was only 2" smaller not 4 so its a bit big, and people said its not as warm as advertised so I ordered a 10 degree bag this thing is toasty warm should have got the 20 degree. Am I satisfied with the quality of the bag absolutely, I just wish i didn't listen to others as much as I did. Would I purchase another bag from EE absolutely this bag is great. One more thing my son has a down bag not a EE and in the morning there is a bunch of feathers in his tent from his down bag, this last backpack trip I found one feather in my tent not sure if it can from my Conundrum or my puffy jacket another plus thanks EE I love this bag.
Conundrum
Just used the bag on Isle Royale for a week, loved it! Feels great, got the wide version, 20 degree, and packs away easily. Lightweight in the backpack and like the option of the clips or the zipper if colder. Gave it four stars instead of five only because zipper seemed to like to catch on fabric, but later in the trip I seemed to be having somewhat less trouble with it. Overall a great bag!
Conundrum
I’m a big guy and toss around. The Revelation quilt is fantastically made and I loved it as long as it wasn’t super cold or very breezy. That being said, I switched over to the Conundrum hoping to combat those two things. It has delivered big time and still allows me to use a quilt if I prefer. EE has great customer service and delivers an excellent product. 5 stars for sure!
conundrum
It's a great bag and quilt. I love it.
Conundrum 950 30F Reg length Extra Wide
I'm 65 and have been a side sleeper for 99% of the time. Changing positions in my other tighter girth bags has meant having to hold the bag down and then sliding and/or hopping to face the other way. The x-width and interior fabric of the Conundrum makes accomplishing this more comfortable than even my bed at home. Adding in the fact that you can place the zipper in any of the four positions is a total plus. Experimenting with the zipper underneath as in trying to use the bag more like a quilt, works in milder temperatures but on a cold, windy night the bag is way warmer when all zipped up. Love the foot box feature and when mated with the EE pad cover the comfort while snoozing is unbeatable. Packs small enough that using a compression sack is (for me) unnecessary. Love that light weight. Where were you 45 years ago?
Conundrum 10F
Very happy and impressed. My only complaint is the zipper gets stuck, but this is not unusual for sleeping bags. Construction is high quality. Temp rating seems accurate. I love sleeping in this bag. HIGHLY recommended!
Well made sleeping bag/quilt
The design and function is great. I haven't tried the conundrum in colder temperatures yet. I like that you can place the zipper in different places depending on preference. The only thing I would change is the neck closure. It would be nice to have two pull tab on each side of the neck to close it up. With it being on one side of the neck, its harder to just pull the tab to get a complete closure without using two hands. With two tabs you could close it up with one hand on each side. It might just be me with the neck closure.
