The Enigma APEX is the synthetic version of the Enigma, pairing the versatility of a quilt with a complete closed footbox. It's the perfect quilt for folks who always get cold feet, or those who want a simple, no-fuss design. The Enigma APEX has all the features of the down version, and thanks to our adjustable pad attachment system, you can kick your feet out or take the quilt with you for late-night stargazing.

The Enigma APEX is a quilt, not a sleeping bag, which means it's designed to be used with a sleeping pad to provide insulation underneath you, between you and the ground. The Enigma APEX doesn't have a zipper or a built-in hood, saving weight and space in your pack.

Important Note: Custom orders cannot be changed once they are in production. Returned custom orders (or custom orders cancelled after production has started) will incur a 20% restocking fee. No exceptions.

    • Round sewn-closed footbox for a no-fuss sleeping experience
    • Pad attachment system uses elastic straps and clips on each side of the quilt to keep it secure on your sleeping pad and lock out drafts
    • Snap and drawcord neck closure lets you fine-tune draft control
    • Climashield APEX insulation performs better than down in wet and humid conditions, dries quickly, packs small, and is easy to clean
    • Built with no sewn-through seams, to eliminate cold spots
    • Ultralight nylon fabric has a DWR finish and has been customized for comfort
    • A sewn-closed 3D footbox minimizing weight and maximizing warmth.
    • Pad attachment system using elastic straps and clips on each side of the quilt to keep you securely on your pad. This gives you the ability to cinch down the sides on those cold nights.
    • Snap and drawstring neck closer fits securely around your shoulders to fine-tune draft control.
    • Fabric colors may appear different from images shown due to rendering and monitor differences. Read more about our Fabrics.
    • Handmade in Winona, Minnesota.

CLIMASHIELD™ APEX weights may vary +/- 10% due to production variances.

Enigma Apex 20 Degree

This is my first quilt, coming from primarily military sleeping bags, and I love this thing. I got the wide version, and it is definitely that. Haven't taken it below 38, but it has certainly been warm so far and I look forward to testing it in colder conditions. The loft of this quilt is great. The only downside so far for me is that it packs larger than I expected in the provided stuff sack. I don't necessarily think that's the fault of the quilt - I knew I was ordering a wide quilt with synthetic insulation, but it is worth noting. This one nitpick should improve when I try it a compression sack. So far so good, and very happy to buy American!

Effective overquilt, but could use a more secure neck button

I used the 50 degree Long Wide APEX enigma as an overquilt on the Appalachian Trail in February from the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee to Waynesboro, VA (~600 miles). It got the job done, preventing condensation from de-lofting my main 15 degree down quilt (Katabatic). The 50 degree quilt is super light and combined with my down quilt to form a performant & flexible winter sleep system. The sleeping pad straps were also really easy to slip over my pad and my primary quilt. On a couple hot nights in Virginia (~50 degrees) I actually used it as my sole quilt since my other one was too warm and it performed great.

My one complaint is that the neck button kept coming undone, causing the quilt to eventually slide halfway down my body in the middle of the night. I think for use as an outer quilt in layering, the top of the bag needs to be a bit wider to prevent the sliding in the first place and the single-button neck clip would be better as a 2-button construction w/ less elasticity on the surrounding fabric to prevent the buttons popping apart easily (similar to Katabatic's style).
