Torrid - Compared to Patagonia and Ghost Whisperer
Although I never pay list price for clothing, I bit the bullet and got the Torrid jacket, expecting it to not live up to all the positive reviews. My main concern was the warmth, relative to my Patagonia Nano, and Ghost Whisperer jackets. Silly me! I tested the Torrid at freezing temps, vs both the other jackets, and found that the Torrid was a distinct notch warmer than the others. This without using the hood. Since I bikepack a lot, I wanted a synthetic jacket, lighter than my 13 oz Nano Puff, that had a hood and was warm and windproof. Bingo - at 8.8 ounces the Torrid filled the bill, and is now my main go-to jacket. Now, how to break it to the other two that they have been replaced?
Awesome Jacket
First of all...I LOVE this jacket. I've been looking at the Torrid jackets for a while and I finally decided to buy one. The build quality of the "off the shelf" jacket is prefect. I cant find a flaw in it. The jacket is super comfortable and very warm. I've been wearing it in a range from 28* at night to 50 * during the day. Its not super wind proof, so if there's a breeze you will fell it. A hard shell is needed when its breezy/windy.
My only complaint about this jacket is the main zipper. There's nothing wrong with it. It functions as designed. But its a #3 zipper, so its small. I would rather pay the price and weight penalty to have a #5 zipper. I feel that I have to be a little cautious with the zipper. It can be easy to misalign and get stuck. Otherwise I wouldn't change anything about the jacket.
Overall, this jacket is 100% worth the money. Its super comfortable, very light weight and so far very durable despite it being 10D. I think its my new favorite jacket. I will be ordering a custom jacket in the near future. I want to upgrade to 20D and different colors.
I 100% recommend this jacket!
Torrid Apex Jacket
Almost a perfect jacket. However, approximately 25 percent of the time the zipper malfunctions when attempting to zip it up. It's the typical failure that most of us have had once in a blue moon. The two sides detach and the zipper pulls up one side, thereby unzipping from the bottom as the slide moves up. Then it is difficult to get the zipper back down and completely detached. Extremely annoying in an otherwise great jacket.
Torrid Jacket
This is a great bit of kit! It replaces another way more expensive “boutique” brand jacket and is 5 ounces lighter and even has a hood. Plan to buy the pants to round out my winter gear.
Torrid Jacket
I love this jacket. I wish I had known about it a long time ago. I got it about a month ago and it has been my winter jacket this year. Totally warm even in cold, windy, winter in Kansas in December and January. It turns winter into summer. I even don't need to wear gloves. Just pull your hands into the jacket. Incredible. I have worn wind block fleece Jackets in the past but not longer. It is also extremely light and I am planning on taking it on my back pack trips in the early spring and late fall.
Trash, complete trash
Wonderful jacket. The 10d non custom jacket is so nice. Soft on the skin, extremely warm, fit is perfect. I'm 5'9 and 185 and the medium fits me with plenty of room for a long sleeve layer, but not much more. Albeit I'm at my winter weight, but the medium is perfecto. The sleeves are tight but have enough give because of the elasticated ends. I love this jacket. It's super light and is just right. Stitching is well done. Checks all my boxes.
So SO warm!
I am so happy I decided on not only a synthetic puffy, but also the EE puffy! I got the green mens small (I am a women’s medium usually) and it fits great! Tested it on a hike yesterday and felt like I was wrapped up in a blanket at home! The material is great and would recommend this jacket to anyone I know!
Fantastic
Size: L
Me: 190lbs, 5' 11"
This jacket is absolutely amazing. Super lightweight.
Comfy and warm so I bought a 2nd one!
Really enjoyed this jacket for the last 3+ years. It’s light, comfy, and warm. I remember falling asleep in it when I first put it on. I usually sleep in it when I’m camping. I tend to wear this under a shell when it’s wet and cold out but it fairs fine in the rain by itself. As another reviewer said it’s hard to put on when you are wet or damp. Obviously it’s great when it’s dry out as well. I enjoyed it so much I bought another one for my brother. Might have to check out a quilt next
Awesome jacket but with one flaw
I recently got this jacket and love how lightweight it is. It’s very comfortable against the skin and has kept my incredibly warm. They one thing I don’t like about it, is the elastic at the bottom. It constantly rides up and I find myself pulling it back down. Within seconds it rides back up. I understand it’s to keep the warm body heat in but I don’t think it’s the best thing. Having a small cinch at the bottom would be a lot better.
Torrid
Very pleased with the jacket, especially how well it compresses. I need it for a bikepacking kit and there is very little space available. it is very comfortable to wear, but already got a little tear in the fabric. The pocket zippers catch a little from time to time, but on balance, very happy with it.
Well built, light, a bit a on the larger (but I was surprised by one thing)
Hello, I received my Men's Torrid APEX Jacket. I ordered a Large (not custom). Overall I am with it. I am about 6'2 and 187lbs and the Large is maybe a bit too big (it seems bigger than other popular brands, MH, TNF...).
However, I was suprised to see on the tag that it was made in Vietnam. I have nothing again products coming from this country, but I thought I was buying a jacket made in the USA. So, I went on their web site and I found this: "Made in Vietnam. Inspected in Winona, Minnesota. For a made in the USA Torrid Jacket, shop our custom Torrid Jacket." I guess I missed that when I read the description before ordering. That being said, the jacket seems will made.
Torrid for Backpacking
I am 6'-8", 270 lbs with long arms, the 2XL fits me great. Warmth for individuals is subjective but I have been taking my morning hikes in this jacket to try it out with just a short sleeve t-shirt underneath and have been warm down to 10 degrees F while hiking and comfortable down to 20 degrees F while stationary. Highly recommend this jacket.
Warm af
This is one of the lightest, warmest jackets I've ever owned. Also super windproof and compressible.
Torrid Apex jacket
I bought this jacket for my son and he loves it. I own one also and feel the same way. Light weight and toasty warm. Perfect for for backpacking and other winter sports.
I love this puffy
I recently purchased an off-the-shelf black Apex and I love it. For it's weight...its very warm and in the tent it works well on less cold nights as a pillow. Plus, despite being a synthetic fill it still packs down to a pretty compact bundle. Well done EE!
Torrid for hiking
Very toasty.
Have the large 10d/10d stock and mine weighs 9.3 oz. Very warm to about freezing with synthetic base layer. Zipper works well just pull out away from you as others have said. The hood is awesome and the key to added warmth. Customer service was top notch when I had questions and even sent me samples of the different D fabrics to compare. My only minor con 8s that the inner lining sticks to you if your arms or hands are wet. No big deal and easy enough to avoid this for potential issues. Will be taking to philmont. Very comfortable and surprisingly more durable than I initially expected.
great jacket!
have used this jacket down to 25 degrees and felt super warm and cozy!
Great jacket! Lightweight and warm
I've been wearing this jacket for the last couple of weeks since receiving it. Keeps me warm at least down to 30F over just a long sleeve shirt. Really lightweight and comfortable. I don't have any issue with the elastic cuffs or waist. As some others have mentioned the main zipper could be a little beefier but so far I haven't had any issues. I'm on the bigger side with broad shoulders (5'11" 220lb) and a large fits me great.
Very Good!!
It was awesome! I want other products soon!
As advertised
I normally wear a LG size. 5’9”, 38” waist. It fit as expected. I could easily layer underneath. An XL would be way too big. Some reviewers have said the cuffs are too tight. Not for me. It’s very warm and is exactly what I wanted for my AT Thru Hike next year. Light. Half the price of other well-known jackets. Can’t comment on the durability since I haven’t worn it much. It’s very thin material as you would expect. I was looking for functionality to provide warmth in camp. I wasn’t looking for style. I ordered the plain black. Very satisfied with my purchase.
Way too big
I usually wear between Small and Medium, I ordered the small size, and its way too big.
Torrid APEX - A fantastic piece of functional no-frills kit.
I’m male, 5’11”, 200 lbs, 43” chest and the Large is a perfect fit. I can wear my Torrid APEX either on its own over a baselayer, layered over a light fleece pullover or as an inner layer over a rain jacket. The jacket is extremely light and pleasant to the touch and the hood is fantastic, it covers the head completely and can be cinched tight over a helmet. The handwarmer pockets are deep and can hold a ton of stuff. Did I already say this jacket is surprisingly WARM and a good windbreaker? Although they work perfectly well I found the zipper grips to be tiny and difficult to use with gloves on so I added homemade zipper pulls using 2mm paracord. I love this jacket, it’s well priced considering its versatility and excellent quality. The Torrid APEX is a fantastic piece of functional no-frills kit.
Great All Around Jacket
I didnt want to review the Torrid until I put it through its paces. And wow, did it deliver. I am 5'7", 180 lbs. I tried the medium and it fit, but was a little snug around my belly, cuz I have a bigger belly. (55 yr old and still hiking) So I moved up to the large. It is definitely a larger, looser fell but I was great with that. Anyway, onto the review. Did a week long hike in the Smoky Mountains for a week where the 1st and 2nd night was 30 degrees. I not only lounged in my new Torrid, but also slept in it as well, all the while wearing a t-shirt. You talk about warm. I did have some light gloves I was wearing as well as the Copperfield Wind pants in the morning and at night after my hike, but was not cold. I was really excited. Being a Florida boy, going from nights of 70 degrees down to 30 the first night, sold me on the excellent performance of this jacket. Cold weather will no longer be a detractor from future hikes in the cold. I believe I cold go colder with more layers. The jacket was comfortable, well made and I didnt feel like I had to baby it. I was actually disappointed when it got in the 50's later in the week cuz the jacket was getting a bit warm to wear. I am glad I made the investment.
Torrid Jacket
Incredible jacket, I purchased a non-custom ready to ship jacket for an upcoming trip and shipping was fast. Jacket was phenomenal in the temps I experienced down to about 34 degrees, kept me warm and packed down small. 100% impressed and happy with the performance and price point, I would highly recommend this jacket.
Listen to the hype
I researched this and similar jackets for a long time..it is all over the ultralight BP pages...but I thought it was hype. I have only owned the jacket for a couple of months, but took it with me on a 2 week van/BP tour of colorado, and it was worth its weight and the gold...
I found a way to stow it in one of its pockets, and I did away with my Montbell for the trip and used this instead..and it performed great. It, plus a merino T shirt were all I needed for that recent snow that CO got..
Just get it, you wont be disappointed.
Warmth to weight:superior
Packability:good
Helmet space in hood:Good
Details/zipper:great
Torid jacket
I wish it stuffed in its own pocket or at least came with a stuff sack. I think the quality is great. I’m not sure it it will be as warm as I’m expecting. It hasn’t gotten cold yet up here. It’s been to warm to wear it. I’m not too crazy about the glossy sheen of the material.
Torrid jacket
Initially I ordered a custom jacket, but the sizing was not quite to my liking. I ordered a medium thinking it would be a snug fit, and I could eliminate a mid layer. But the fact of the matter is it was OK in the shoulders But way too tight throughout the midsection. I’m slim so the sizing is prob correct but I needed more room or the jacket continued to ride up. So I ordered a std jacket one size larger and am very happy with the fit. This jacket rocks! Simple and effective it does what it’s supposed to do; keep you warm! For the weight, price, and performance this is really hard to beat.
APEX TORRID MEN'S LARGE
I'm 6'4 with a pretty athletic build. This jacket fits great. The texture of the silnylon is SO SOFT it surprised me. Has done an incredible job keeping me warm and I pair it with the EE VISP mittens. So happy with this purchase and 10/10 would recommend. Keep it up guys!
Torrid Apex jacket
Had to wait an extra while due to supplies being restocked but the wait was worth it. Am usually in between a large/medium and since they run a little big, the medium fit perfectly. This winter I’ve been using only my base layers, shirt, Patagonia tech hoodie and a rain jacket that served With both Rain and wind protection. I was shivering in 20 temps and lower. As soon as I tried on the Torrid, I immediately felt so much warmer and comfortable in 25 degrees...February....Cleveland weather.
The hood I didn’t find really big, more of just a solid, comfortable fit.
I still have a lot of testing to do with this jacket but so far I am very happy with my decision to buy it.
Now I just need to get a mid layer to wear under it. Is there such a thing as a perfect mid layer to go with this jacket?
Torid Apex jacket
I’ve owned several kinds of puffy coats. This one is the best for me. It crazy light the hood is perfect, and it keeps me warm even if or when I get wet.
very warm
Extremely lightweight and very warm. Used it on an elk hunt in December and it performed perfectly.
Torrid Apex Jacket
It's unbelievable how such a light jacket can be so warm.
It packs small, super confortable, super warm.
Awesome piece of gear, best jacket I've owned so far.
And the best of it all, no animals were killed for me to be warm!
The Best
Warmest for the weight, most practical insulation, extremely well-crafted, and a perfect fit. Highest recommendation!
Lightweight
I love the lightweight feel of this jacket. It's completely at home in the mountains, but for casual use I tend to get made fun of due to the shiny black fabric. It has everything you need, and nothing you don't. I was worried about going with a synthetic instead of down, but I really like that I don't have to worry as much about moisture.
The only issues I have are minor. The elastic in the cuffs rolls around and doesn't stay flat (I would prefer a different cuff). Also, when completely zipped up, the jacket is too tight around my chin. It's been said before, an elastic drawstring at the bottom would be helpful. I have a slim athletic build, and find the fit to be a bit too loose.
Mens Torrid Apex Jacket
This excellent jacket is well made and very comfortable. On the trail it does a good job of blocking the wind as well. The fit is good with a base layer and long sleeve shirt underneath. I am happy with this jacket.
Men's Torrid Apex Jacket
Ordered a small. I'm 5'8", 30-inch waist, 38-inch chest, and weigh about 150 lbs (give or take 5 lbs depending on the time of the year). The jacket fit fine. I almost traded it in for a medium, but ran out of time before a trip. I'm glad I kept the small after using it.
It performed better than my expectations. I used it for a spring trip where temps in the evenings and early mornings were in the 30s (one night was in the 20s). While doing camp chores, I was fine in a 175 gsm merino long sleeve baselayer under the Torrid. When sitting around camp at the lower temps, I used the merino baselayer and a 100 weight fleece under the Torrid. With that combo, had I been moving around I would have been sweating. The layers fit fine under the jacket - I didn't feel my movement was restricted at all.
The sleeves are a bit tighter than insulated jackets I've used in the past. That's where my skepticism almost had me convinced to size up. Once I got used to a more streamlined jacket (took one evening of use), I never again thought about the tighter sleeves.
This is absolutely a great three-season jacket. I would purchase it again in a heartbeat.
Mens Torrid Apex Jacket
Great jacket. It's very light, warm, and the lack of baffles really helps to block out the wind. I am 6'1" 185lbs, and the large fits me very well. I have pretty average size wrists, and I have faced none of the issues some people have had with the wrist elastic being too tight. I was a little worried that a lightweight jacket would tear easily, but the material feels strong and it has caught on several branches so far without any damage. I did a lot of research before getting this jacket, and I don't think you could get a better jacket for the price. I am very happy with this purchase.
Men's Torrid Apex Jacket
I purchased this jacket in the fall of 2018 and have worn it no more than 10 times outside. This jacket is very warm and very lightweight. Exactly what I ordered it for however, I have a few issues with it:
1. The cuff elastic wrist cuffs are a bit too tight.
2. When I first put the jacket on and put my arms all the way through the sleeves, the inner sleeve material comes out past the elastic cuffs and I have to pull open the cuff elastic and pull the material back inside the sleeve.
3. The zippers are suspect to me. Today (01-22-2019) I wore it outside and zipped my cell phone inside the right pocket. When I tried to unzip the pocket, the zipper jammed up and got off track. I had to fiddle with the zipper for about 15 mins when I got back home to get my cell phone out and get the zipper back on track. It had gotten jammed on the material on the inside of the pocket along the zipper track.
4. This jacket doesn't come with a little stuff sack and/or there isn't any way to pull it inside of one of the pockets for storage.
Men's Torrid Apex Jacket
Bought it for late-fall and early-winter backpacking. The medium fits me perfectly (5'-11", 168 lbs, slim waist, broad shoulders. My only slight complaint, shared with other reviewers, is that the elastic wrist cuffs are a bit tight. Otherwise, I'm very pleased with the jacket. It is super light and packable, and very warm. Not exactly a high-fashion garment, but excellent back country utility.
Men's Torrid Apex Jacket
So far I love the jacket. It is very light and warm. Fit is good with the large, and it stuffs into a small stuff sack well, but not quite as well as a down puffy jacket. I only have one complaint and one concern. The complaint is that the elastic cuffs are a bit tight (I usually pull a bit of the liner through with my hand when I put the jacket on. The concern is that when I put the jacket on once, I thought that I heard a seam rip. However, I looked at every seam on the jacket, and couldn't find any problems.
Men's Medium Torrid Apex Jacket with Hood
I took this phenomenal jacket with me on every backpacking trip I took this summer, from the Beartooth's Beaten Path, to south-central Montana's Crazy Mountains, and finally to Wyoming's Cirque of the Towers loop. It is incredibly warm, lightweight, and super comfortable. The fit is spot on; my medium fits perfectly (5'11", 150 lbs.). It is super packable and if you ultralight, like my family and I do, I do not think that there is a lighter weight, warmer, or more packable jacket on the market (the same goes for EE’s quilts). Plus, the color options are numerous and add to the sheer enjoyment of owning this awesome customizable mountain gear. Several nights dropped below freezing and the jacket kept me very warm. I used it as an additional layer with the hood on under my EE Enigma quilt and never lacked for warmth on the coldest nights. I highly recommend that you purchase one today.
4.5 stars: light, warm and flexible
The Torrid has solved my fleece/puffy backpacking dilemma. Love the warmth to weight, roomy hood, and nice fit with a long sleeve baselayer underneath. I'm a lean 6ft and went with medium. My issue's with the elastic wrists: they are a great idea, but a little too tight!
