Took the canoe out on a small wilderness river for early season smallies with my new Saga Crisis Medium spinning rod. Water was cold — still had ice flows floating by — so a slow finesse presentation was key. Casting a 3” swim bait, I noticed right away how effortless it was even sitting down, thanks to the rod length and short handle. I’d normally grab a medium light, but this rod impressed me. Stayed in contact with my jig even wearing gloves, and having my fingers on the blank let me feel everything.

But hands down, the weight was the biggest benefit. I’m 65 and on the water over 100 days a year — my hands, wrists and knuckles take a beating, so lightweight, high quality equipment is essential. Very fishable, versatile, cleverly designed. Excited to try more rods from Saga.

Opening trout season in Minnesota put the Saga Outfitters Crisis Series rod (7', mid-light, fast) to the test. Started the day at 27 degrees, frozen guides and all, and the first thing I noticed was how ridiculously light it feels compared to my usual 6'6” St. Croix. Clearing ice off the smaller guides was surprisingly easy.

For a light rod, it has a lot of backbone. I landed fish on floating Rapala Raps, a 1/4-oz vibrating Roostertail, and a 1/32-oz hair jig on 6-lb test. Even in tight, brushy water 4–5 feet wide, the 7-foot length was a non-issue — casts stayed accurate and controlled. Sensitivity was unreal too, I could literally feel raindrops hitting the blank.

Just a fun rod to fish. Light, sensitive, and versatile.

Broke out the new Crisis 7'3” ML on my first river trip of the season, paired with a Daiwa Tatula, light braid and an 18” 8 lb fluoro leader. Fishing a 1/4 oz hair jig with a 3” paddle tail for river smallies in high, cold water. The short handle is perfect since I fish sitting down, and I was skeptical about the micro eyes but felt no drag at all.

The rod is crazy light, so I could immediately feel when the jig was fouled or touching bottom — huge advantage when no two casts feel the same. Third cast I got the classic slack line thump and hooked a 34” musky. Slow, powerful runs, but I could control it. Felt like I was fighting the fish on the whole rod, which a lot of these ultralight finesse rods can't do.

Really positive experience. Simple design, impressive results. Bravo Saga!

How light are SAGA rods? 1

Every SAGA rod weighs under three ounces, and the weights we publish are for the complete rod, not just the blank. We keep weight down with nano running guides, Fuji ultralight reel seats, and American Tackle guides, all hand-wrapped in-house. Our lightest rod, the Ruckus 7' Light, weighs just 2.28 ounces.

Why do SAGA rods have a short butt section? 1

When you're fishing from a canoe or kayak seat, a long butt section catches on seats, gunwales, and your PFD. SAGA rods use a shortened butt for cleaner handling while seated, and they still balance well when standing in a boat or fishing from shore.

Which SAGA rod series is right for me? 1

It comes down to the blank. Ruckus is the most durable, with the highest tensile strength in the line, making it a great first rod and the best choice for rough travel. Crisis uses our most sensitive blank for clear water, long casts, and light baits, while Dilemma sits between the two, leaning closer to Crisis in feel.

How do I choose the right rod power? 1

Start with what you're tying on. Light rods handle 1/32 to 1/4 oz lures for panfish and stream trout, medium light rods cover 1/16 to 3/8 oz for smallmouth, walleye, and drop-shot rigs, and medium rods handle 1/8 to 1/2 oz for largemouth and pike. Medium light is the most versatile and where most anglers end up.

Do you make packable or travel-friendly rods? 1

Yes. The Ruckus series includes two 7' three-piece rods that break down to fit inside your pack, which makes them ideal for long portages or fly-in trips. All Crisis and Dilemma rods are one-piece.
